August 20, 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Tuesday ordered the Sovereign Council to take control of the country’s border crossings, a move aimed at streamlining the delivery of humanitarian aid amid the ongoing conflict.
Sudan is preparing to open several border crossings to facilitate the delivery of aid to those affected by the war. Burhan recently approved the opening of the Adre crossing with Chad to address the dire humanitarian situation in Darfur.
The sovereign council said in a statement that the move aims to “simplify cross-border procedures, ensure smooth commercial flows and speed up customs clearance of goods.”
Currently, Sudan’s land and sea border crossings are supervised by the Ministry of Transport. The country borders the Central African Republic, Egypt, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Libya and Chad.
