August 8, 2024 (Juba) – Sudanese warplanes crossed the border into South Sudan on Tuesday and bombed the town of Holtumbak in Upper Nile state, killing two civilians and injuring several others, local officials said.
Maban county commissioner Peter Alberto told the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation that civilians were killed on farms and on their way to markets and aid distribution centers. The attacks also destroyed homes and livestock.
“The attack killed two civilians who were working on the farm. Others were injured,” Alberto said.
Alberto did not elaborate on the reasons for the attack but said he had informed the governor.
SSPDF spokesman Maj. Gen. Ruel Ruai Koang called the attack unprovoked and said the military leadership was aware of it.
Cohen confirmed the validity of the two countries’ 2012 non-aggression pact.
“The agreement is still in place and from our side we have not crossed the border into the Sudanese side,” Cohen said.
Landlocked South Sudan consumed three-quarters of the country’s oil when it gained independence in 2011, but the oil is piped to Sudan, which controls export facilities.
The Sudanese military has not yet made any statement on the matter.
