July 30, 2024 (Diling) – The Sudanese army on Tuesday attacked the positions of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdul Aziz Al-Hilu in southern Diiling, South Kordofan State, aiming to break their siege of the densely populated area.
The SPLM-N established a foothold in parts of Deering, the state’s second-largest city, in January and took control of some areas. The army, backed by the SPLM-N, repelled several attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that month, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers.
A military source told Sudan Tribune that government forces attacked SPLM-North positions in the early hours of Tuesday, driving them out of the city, causing casualties and equipment losses, and destroying one of their camps.
The sources said the army has been deployed south of Dillin Airport and controls the “Karkaba, Jabalkun” area, about 5 kilometers from the city.Karkaba houses a crude oil pumping station that was captured by the SPLM-N forces in recent months as part of their expansion in South Kordofan.
Meanwhile, residents celebrated the event with a massive parade in Deering, culminating in a rally at the 54th Brigade headquarters where the military garrison commander addressed them.
Dillin remains under a tight siege due to clashes between the army, the Rapid Security Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North’s Popular Army, which surrounds the city from the south and west, and the Rapid Security Forces from the northeast.
The prolonged siege led to shortages and rising prices of daily necessities in the Dillin region, resulting in widespread famine.
