18 August 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudanese political and civil society groups welcomed the government’s refusal to participate in the Geneva peace talks with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) until the previously signed agreement in Jeddah is implemented, and condemned abuses committed by the paramilitary group.
Around a dozen coalitions and political parties met in Port Sudan on Saturday to discuss the political, security and humanitarian situation in the country, as well as escalating attacks on civilians by the Rapid Security Forces.
Groups such as the Democratic Front, the National Movement Force, some factions of the People’s Congress Party, Sufis and some resistance committees reiterated their support for the army in a joint statement issued after the meeting.
The participants stressed the need to implement the Jeddah Declaration signed in May 2023 and condemned the transfer of negotiations from Jeddah to Geneva. They further rejected any attempt to reintegrate the RSF into political life and praised the government’s position and the humanitarian support of some Arab countries.
The groups condemned the Rapid Rescue Team for “flagrant human rights violations, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, rape, arbitrary arrests and killings” and criticized regional countries that provide political, media and logistical support to the Rapid Rescue Team.
It is noteworthy that the Democratic Bloc, which is made up of several armed groups that signed the Juba Peace Agreement, is actively fighting alongside the army against the Rapid Security Forces and is advocating for its inclusion in any potential peace talks with the Rapid Security Forces.
