August 10, 2024 (GEDAREF) – Sudanese troops on Saturday repelled an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the border between Gedaref and Al Jazira states, local officials said.
The Rapid Security Forces have been operating in the border area for weeks and have been accused of looting and expelling civilians.
“The armed forces, intelligence services and mobilisation forces repelled the RSF attack near Wad al-Fakisa,” said Othman Abdallah, executive director of the Al Faw region.
He said the army destroyed about 15 RSF vehicles and killed a large number of fighters. He also said the army had made significant progress toward Al Jazirah state, but did not provide specific details.
The two sides have been engaged in sporadic clashes along the border for months. In April, Indian troops launched an operation to retake Al Jazira state, but the operation was quickly halted after the Rapid Support Forces ambushed its troops.
