August 3, 2024 (AL-TADAMUN) – The Sudanese army said on Saturday that it repelled an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Blue Nile state, the first fighting between the two sides in the border region with Ethiopia.
Activists have accused the RSF of abusing civilians in several villages in the area. Sudan Tribune has been unable to independently verify the allegations.
The military said in a statement on its Facebook page that the fighting took place in the Kali area of the Tadamon region.
The military said it destroyed RSF vehicles, killed dozens of fighters and captured others. Videos released by the military showed soldiers seizing RSF vehicles and capturing bodies left behind by the attackers.
The Rapid Security Forces said they had full control of Tadamon and released more videos of suspected militants inside the military camp.
The resistance council in Damazin, the Blue Nile regional capital, said RSF fighters entered the state from Sennar state in the west on Saturday afternoon. The fighters reached the Jaliwa and Kali regions, killing and looting in Jaliwa before being pushed back by the army in Kali.
The commission said a number of civilians were killed or injured.
The Blue Nile region hosts many displaced people from Sennar State, but communications have been cut off since June.
Since fighting broke out between Sudanese troops and the Rapid Security Forces in Khartoum on April 15, the conflict has spread to other parts of Sudan, including the western Darfur region.
The Rapid Security Forces have controlled large parts of Sennar state since June.
