August 5, 2024 (El Fasher) – Sudanese warplanes bombed a famine-hit displaced persons camp in North Darfur on Sunday night, killing children and injuring many others, a local aid group said.
The attack on Zam Zam refugee camp, which is home to nearly half a million people, came after the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) initiative, backed by UN agencies, declared famine in the region.
Local aid group General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps said two bombs hit the camp on Sunday night, destroying more than 20 houses and injuring four children.
The group condemned the attack as a war crime and called on the international community to protect civilians in Darfur.
“Attacks on defenceless displaced people in camps with bombs and explosives are deliberate and cowardly acts that cannot be justified,” the group said in a statement.
A faction of the Gathering of Sudan Liberation Forces (GSLF), led by Al-Taher Hajer and not involved in the current conflict, also condemned the attack and warned against targeting displaced people.
Sudan’s military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Zam Zam camp is located in El Fasher, an area controlled by the military and allied forces, although the GSLF in Hajar has a military base nearby.
Clashes between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group have killed thousands of people and displaced more than four million since April, according to the United Nations.
The conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis, with many people struggling to access food, water and health care.
The IPC said last week that famine had been declared in parts of North Darfur, including the Zam Zam camp, due to a lack of food and humanitarian aid.
