August 30, 2024 (OMTORMAN/ AL-DINDER/GEIDARIF) – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Friday intensified its bombardment of Omtorman, targeting several areas with heavy artillery as fierce fighting broke out between paramilitary groups and Sudanese troops in Sennar and Gedaref states.

The artillery of the Rapid Security Forces stationed in Bahri, Khartoum, heavily shelled the Karali district of Omdurman, and the shelling range expanded to the northern suburbs of the city. Local sources told Sudan Tribune that the attack killed a woman and injured a child.

In response, Sudanese troops retaliated by launching concentrated artillery fire from positions north of Omdurman, targeting RSF positions in Khartoum, Khartoum Bahri, and areas west and south of Omdurman.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Security Forces, using their positions in Khartoum and Khartoum Bahri, shelled several historic neighbourhoods in Omdurman and the suburb of Al-Sawra in the Karali area north of Omdurman.

Khartoum state government officials expressed to Sudan Tribune their concerns about the deliberate attacks by the Rapid Support Forces on residential areas of Omdurman, stressing that there has been a marked increase in such attacks over the past two months.

On Friday, the state government based in the Kalari region issued a statement condemning the “deliberate” shelling of Kalari residential areas by the Rapid Security Forces. The government detailed how the Rapid Security Forces fired about 10 shells at blocks 9, 13, 23 and 24 in the suburb of Al-Sawra, in addition to striking the northern countryside of Omdurman, affecting the island of Gezira and Nuba.

Sennar Front

In the southeastern state of Sennar, the RSF claimed in a statement on Friday that it had regained control of the Bunzuqa area, part of the Al-Suki region on the east bank of the Nile. They further claimed that they were ready to advance on army positions within the state.

Earlier this week, Sudanese army soldiers released a video showing them taking control of Bunzuqa during clashes that left several RSF fighters dead, weapons seized and combat vehicles destroyed. The Sudanese army also reported gains in the Sennar region, including the capture of the villages of Jalqani and Al-Lukundi.

Instead, the RSF circulated videos of Sudanese air force attacks on the city of Al-Dinder in Sennar state. The RSF claimed that these attacks caused civilian casualties, including women and children, and destroyed many houses, and the images they released were evidence of this.

Earlier, Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces had seized control of Sinja, the capital of Sennar State, and expanded their control to other parts of the state in July. However, the Sudanese army still controls Sennar, the second largest city in the state.

Gedarev Front

In the eastern state of Gedaref, military sources told Sudan Tribune that government forces and their allies conducted large-scale military operations and sweeps on the Fao axis on Friday, involving all combat units.

These sources stated that the army successfully repelled the RSF, advanced its positions and took control of the Wadfiqisha area. They further detailed a successful ambush on a RSF position that enabled the army to advance approximately 25 kilometers and capture 17 RSF prisoners of war as well as a truck full of supplies.

The footage showed RSF fighters being held captive, blindfolded and with their hands tied, in the Franco-Austrian Axis.

In North Darfur, local sources reported that the government air force carried out a series of airstrikes on Friday morning, targeting Rapid Security Forces positions north and east of the state capital, El Fasher.

At the same time, the Rapid Support Forces launched retaliatory artillery fire on army and allied armed movement positions in the south of the city from their eastern positions.

Earlier, US envoy to Sudan Tom Perillo warned that the Rapid Security Forces were gathering forces to prepare for another attack on El Fasher.

He also said their immediate goal was to stop the sporadic shelling of residential areas by the Rapid Security Forces.
