August 9, 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan’s Sovereign Council said on Friday it had sent a delegation to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to consult with the United States on its upcoming invitation to participate in the negotiations on the Rapid Support Force (RSF) in Geneva.
The delegation, led by Mines Minister Mohammed Bashir Abu Nomo, left for Jeddah this morning. Military sources told Sudan Tribune that the Sudanese delegation had been allowed to discuss the agenda for the Geneva talks, the countries that will oversee the negotiations and those that may monitor any final agreement.
The fate and implementation of the Jeddah Agreement is the top priority for the Sudanese delegation. The US State Department said the previous ceasefire agreement will serve as the basis for a new round of negotiations.
The source also said the Sudanese delegation would oppose a US proposal to include the UAE as one of the countries monitoring the talks. Sudan has reservations about the UAE’s role because it is seen as supporting the RSF.
Reporters Without Borders media official told Sudan Tribune that Reporters Without Borders has confirmed to the United States that its delegation will be the same as the previous delegation in Jeddah talks and is ready for “constructive and serious talks” in Geneva.
The United States has invited Sudan’s army and rapid security forces to attend talks in Geneva on August 14, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and under international observation.
Sudan’s Sovereign Council said the move reflected the government’s determination to achieve peace and stability.
The Sudanese government had previously set conditions for the talks, including prior consultation on the agenda and participants, and insisted on implementing the Jeddah Declaration, which called for the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces and an end to their expansion.
The Jeddah Declaration was signed in May but has been repeatedly violated.
