Sudan reports new cholera cases as floods worsen health crisis

15 August 2024 (Kassala/Dongora) – Sudan’s Ministry of Health reported 11 new cases of cholera on Thursday, including one death, bringing the total number of cholera cases to 300 and the death toll to 18 since the outbreak was declared last week.

The epidemic is most serious in Wad Hiliu area of ​​Kassala State, with a total of 143 confirmed cases and 8 deaths.

The outbreak comes as heavy rains and flooding have disrupted health services and exacerbated the spread of diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.

In the northern state, floods have killed 31 people, injured 179 and reported 155 scorpion stings. More than 2,300 houses have been destroyed and thousands of families have been displaced.

The number of cases of epidemic conjunctivitis has also surged, reaching 1,569, of which 26 have been cured.
