July 3, 2024 (Kampala) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on Wednesday announced its decision not to attend the Cairo conference scheduled for this weekend, which aims to narrow the differences between political forces on comprehensive peace in Sudan.
Cairo intends to host the conference on July 6-7, which will be attended by Sudanese civil political forces, and relevant regional and international partners to jointly explore solutions to the Sudanese crisis.
“The movement has rejected the invitation to attend the meeting of political and civil forces scheduled for early next week in Cairo,” Ammar Am Dardum, secretary-general of the movement led by Abdelaziz Al-Hilu, told Sudan Tribune, adding that the movement was reserving its reasons for not attending the meeting.
The deputy chairwoman of the Revolutionary Democratic Front, Buthaina Dinar, also refused to attend the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Political Forces Conference in Cairo. She called on the Coordination Council of Democratic Civil Forces (Tagadum) to have a clear vision of the political process before attending the conference.
Taghadoom had previously announced his commitment to attend the Cairo conference, which aims to play an important role in dialogue on how to end the conflict and bring peace to Sudan.
The meeting will also be attended by the Democratic Front group allied with Sudan’s military, as well as some politicians and BroadCast Unitedlectuals.
The African Union plans to hold a similar meeting next week, bringing together political forces with similar goals, but observers say it will lack coordination and have a repetitive agenda.
