28 August 2024 (Port Sudan) – The death toll from floods in Sudan has reached 148, with 246 injured in 11 states, the National Civil Defence Committee said on Wednesday, as heavy rains continued to cause severe damage and hamper the delivery of aid.

According to spokesman Maj. Gen. Qureshi Hussein, the worst-hit states include River Nile (59 deaths), Northern (31 deaths) and Red Sea (16 deaths).

The floods destroyed roads and bridges, including major routes such as the Haya-Atbara and Merowe-Dongola highways, disrupting transport and access in the affected areas.

Civil protection authorities have been carrying out evacuations and providing shelter, food and other necessities to the displaced.

Hussein denied reports that it was difficult to retrieve bodies from the Arbat Dam area because the water was too deep, and said trained divers and equipment were already on the surface.

Despite efforts to stabilize the situation at the Arbat Dam and in the Tokar region, more flooding from the Kuper Dolabyay region inundated more neighborhoods, further exacerbating the crisis.

With roads cut off, delivering aid by land became impossible, necessitating emergency airdrops of food, medicine and shelter.

“The situation in these areas is extremely critical,” Hussein warned.
