20 August 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan’s campaign against sexual violence has recorded 54 new cases of rape in just one month, five of which involved children, highlighting the growing threats facing women and girls in the country’s brutal conflict.
The Together Against Rape and Sexual Violence campaign said the attacks took place between June 30 and July 30, mostly in the capital, Khartoum, and the neighboring state of Al Jazira. Another 19 cases occurred in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, which has been ravaged by fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since May.
The movement calls for an end to the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and urges the international community to hold perpetrators accountable.
The United Nations and human rights groups have accused the Rapid Support Forces of being responsible for most of the conflict-related sexual violence, including systematic rape and abductions.
The conflict in Sudan that broke out in April has triggered a humanitarian disaster with widespread reports of human rights violations. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable and face a high risk of sexual violence, displacement and exploitation.
