August 31, 2024 (Juba) – Sudan appoints new ambassador to South Sudan.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of Sudan’s transitional sovereign council, appointed Essam Eldin Mohammed Karal to replace Gamal Abdel Majid.
The new envoy traveled to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, on July 31 to meet with South Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ramadan Abdallah Goc to present his credentials and letters of appointment to President Salva Kiir.
Sudanese Consul Yahya Mohammed Osman accompanied Karal to the meeting.
Osman said the country’s diplomatic corps participated in the meeting.
He further said that a meeting with the President will be arranged in the coming days.
“The ambassador will present his credentials to the president of the republic (of South Sudan), which will be decided after coordination with relevant ministries,” Osman told state television. (St. Paul’s Bay Commercial Bank) Tuesday.
In a series of interviews with Sudan Tribune, diplomatic experts and diplomats said there are many ways to appoint ambassadors.
The appointment of ambassadors depends on the existing political system.
An ambassador is a diplomatic representative of his or her country abroad. In some countries, the executive branch of the government (usually the president’s office) nominates ambassadors, who are approved by parliament.
Most ambassadors rise through the Foreign Service to become career diplomats.
