Queen guitarist Sir Brian Harold May will make history with a record 104th victory for another knight, Sir Lewis Hamilton, who arrives after more than two years of fasting. In fact, the last one was in Jeddah at the end of 2021: however, at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Hamilton made a “jacket” and also took the fastest lap of the race. The seven-time British world champion thus won the top division for the ninth time in his career in front of his home fans and on one of the oldest and most admired tracks in the history of the sport.

The race never disappointed the spectators and the drivers, as it was run on a track that was fast, safe and largely enjoyable for the drivers, even if they were often forced to race in the wet, including today. The race in England was a thrilling one, thanks to the mixed emotions of Hamilton, Verstappen and Norris, who fought to the end despite diametrically opposed tyre choices.

To be honest, Verstappen came in late between the two Britons, who were the real protagonists of the weekend. So much so that yesterday, for the first time in history, three Britons performed well in qualifying at Silverstone: Russell, Hamilton and Norris. For Russell, it was the third pole position of his career, while Hamilton has not sat on the front row for 22 Grand Prix.

It must be said that if Mercedes’ recent upgrades were correct, unlike Ferrari, “downgrading” the single-seaters at Imola to a theoretically more suitable and reassuring setup, however, not everything went smoothly even for the three-pointed star. Having to withdraw Russell’s car, he started from pole position and “ran empty” on the first lap. Mechanical aspects aside, due to the rain, the young Englishman from Mercedes had already lost the lead of the race to Norris, who seemed to favor the McLaren team. The Woking single-seater proved to be completely at home in the wet: it was no coincidence that Norris took the podium not far from Max and Lewis, while Piastri finished fourth, still far behind his more experienced teammate, but still always able to play a good supporting role. For the Australian, today we also celebrate the fact that he has won fourth place in the drivers’ standings, beating Perez, who barely finished the race. Furthermore, if he had not had to withdraw his car, mathematically Russell’s overtaking of the Mexican would have also occurred and he would still be seven points behind, whereas for Hamilton it would have been a matter of one or two races at most.

Mercedes has thus finally recovered from the uncertainty of the start of the season: especially after the disaster in Monaco, it always wanted to take more points from the pony. Especially today, Leclerc and Perez already made laps in the first half of the race. However, after overtaking Hulkenberg, Ferrari seemed capable of a comeback, at least in the first laps. Just an illusion: in the end Sainz finished a good fifth, while Leclerc fell to fourteenth.
