Company agreements and collective agreements

Meanwhile, some RTCT employees continue to denounce their working conditions. This is the case of Marcelle Pito, 75, a truck driver who later worked as a bus driver for 20 years. “We have two round trips a day, one week starting at 3am and the other week lasting until 7pm. I need to work for retirement because our wages are so low. This will be the first time in my life that I strike,” she revealed. In contrast, employee representative (Otahi) Heimata Tetuanui said he was surprised:We are the majority union in the company. We have a two-year wage agreement with the company. We have an open door with management and we are working hard to improve the lives of our employees, so I don’t understand this strike.” In light of this disagreement, the tone among employees escalated. “It is absurd to defend these four-page agreements and a salary of 176,500 francs after twenty years of service. We disagree: it is not enough! We are fighting for unfair salaries. We want a version of the draft collective agreement for common carriers drawn up by the state. We are not fighting just for ourselves, we are fighting for everyone”Aporina Tarihaa, another disgruntled driver, estimated.
 
Mahinui Temarii, secretary general of the Polynesian Workers Assembly, who was present to offer his support, also stressed this at the top of his list of 18 demands: “We demand a collective agreement so that they can live better in the company. Drivers are attacked. There is no sense of security. All other points follow from this agreement. The state has a DSP (Public Service Delegation, editor’s note). It is a lot of money, but the problem is that nothing is provided for the employees”he noted.
