The Ministry of Education has agreed that students can rate their teachers. That’s all there is to it.

The Ministry of Education has approved requests from students to provide feedback to their teachers. The feedback form and the method of granting it have been published in the 2021 Official Gazette. This year, they have also been included in the Student Charter.

The students made this request to the Ministry of Education because they hope to build a stronger, more efficient and more transparent teaching community.

Communication between teachers and students is particularly important for the development of the latter, but also for the moderators.

Whether those around them realize it or not, teachers are role models for their students, both positively and negatively. While parents and families are largely the educators of their children, schools and teachers also play an important role.

Parents often seek feedback from teachers about their children, while communication in the Romanian education system largely takes place in the absence of the student – ​​even if he is the main factor.

The ministry approved students’ requests to provide feedback to classroom teachers despite the measure’s “shortcomings.” Even experienced teachers can reveal shortcomings.

It is important to note that the feedback provided by students is anonymous. This measure has many advantages, but it also has disadvantages.

Corneliu Riegler, head of the History Department and professor of History at the Bilingual National Academy “George Koshbuk” in Bucharest, spoke about some of them.

“In my opinion, it’s a very good decision and in my opinion, it’s a normal thing that has to happen. I’ve been doing this on my own initiative for over 30 years.

Corneliu Riegler also raised the risks of this measure, such as students giving positive feedback when teachers are not actually fulfilling their responsibilities:

“I tell you honestly: about 75% of students appreciate a teacher who doesn’t teach them anything but gives them 10 points. Therefore, how such measures are implemented is very important, because there can be positive measures, but the way they are applied should be completely the opposite. These measures are correct and good in theory, but fail in practice.”

“I say this because I’ve come across a variety of situations. In some of the more professional and sophisticated questionnaires, I look at how students answer, what questions they ask, and their sincerity and focus.

Do you know what I found? A lot of kids didn’t understand the questions in the questionnaire and didn’t know the meaning of certain common words. I asked the students if the evaluation system in history class was subjective or objective to them, and some didn’t know what the two words meant. I had to explain it to them.

Then, as leaders, I asked them what they would do if they were the leader for the week. Most students responded that they would justify all absences, they would let students mess up or let them do what they wanted,” the teacher added.

The risk, therefore, is that teachers will back off and force themselves to be more tolerant and allow students more freedom: “Because teachers who don’t participate please everyone. No one complains and everyone is satisfied. Collective fear may set in. In order to avoid negative feedback that damages their status, image, or even their career, many teachers may give up these demands.”

Corneliu Riegler tells about his personal experience when he received negative feedback from a student. Meanwhile, the teacher believes that feedback forms should be administered in class without the involvement of management, as the situation may be completely different after a free discussion.

“I had a student who gave me a black ball, so to speak. He indicated in his questionnaire that the evaluation system for the test they gave in class was subjective. However, I only give grid tests. So it’s either white or black. Subjectivism has no place here. I later found out that this was a mistake and that the student did not understand the term, he did not know what the word subjective meant,” he reported.

Parents are not entirely in favor of rigorous evaluations either. This is especially true when students have done well in elementary or middle school, and the transition to high school turns their world upside down. Frustration can cause them to view high school teachers as enemies rather than objective teachers who work with teenagers day in and day out.

“But let’s not go to extremes! In my time, some teachers didn’t give 9 marks. 10 marks were for God and 9 marks were for the teacher. So the student could not get more than 8 marks.

Now there are teachers who only give high grades! Especially those who teach in middle schools. Students go from elementary school to high school with high or even high average grades, and then they suffer a real shock.

Some people in history class get a 10, but in reality they are in grade 5. When parents see their children’s real level, they get upset”, the Bucharest teacher also claimed.

What questions does the feedback form include?

First, students knew what the respective forms were, but also knew that their comments would be anonymous.

They have to fill in the name of the teacher they are evaluating and the subject they teach. They then have to rate their respective teachers and their own work related to the respective subject from 1 to 5 to 16 points.

In this format, students also find a special area for open answers, for those occasions when they want to express freely in written form the questions they want to ask about the subject or the teaching style. The first one is: “I hope that in this class I will…” The second one is: “If you had to tell the teacher one idea after this semester, what would it be?”

Also, at the end of the form, students must write down the percentage of hours they attended the assessment subject during the respective semester.
