Stuttgart (633,000 inhabitants) has seen an increase of 29.2% in cases over the past four years (currently 270 cases). The Baltic metropolis of Rostock (210,000 inhabitants), the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, also faces street crime problems. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of attacks increased from 62 to 101 (+62.9%). In turn, in the Saxon city of Leipzig (620,000 inhabitants), the crime rate rose relatively slightly over four years: from 202 to 241 crimes (+19.3%).
Within three points Germany’s largest city — Berlin (3.75 million inhabitants), Hamburger (1.89 million) and Munich (1.5 million) – this indicator is also on the rise. In the last four years, the number of cases increased by 82.5%. (from 177 to 323).
In Hamburg, there was a 36.3% increase over the same period (1,137 attacks). In Berlin, the number of crimes increased by 29.5%: from 2,000 to 479 in 2019 and 3,000 to 210 last year.

Patrick S. was returning home on a city train just after 6 a.m. after a night of partying in Steintor, Hanover, Lower Saxony. He believed the perpetrator was waiting in the carriage with him. As soon as he got off the train, it started. – My legs were kicked from behind. Two young men sat on me and searched my pockets. One of them threatened to stab me, but I didn’t resist. Then they took my wallet and cell phone, he said.
The man locked himself in his apartment for two months because criminals stole his keys. “I became more careful, I looked around more often, I stopped traveling by train and walking alone in the city at night,” he said today.
In the above-mentioned cities, the proportion of suspects who are non-German citizens is higher than average. Most thieves are young people..
