School principals have been urged to allow pupils to wear light-coloured trousers/leggings and long-sleeved tops when classes resume early next month due to an outbreak of dengue fever in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Ministry of Education said schools should also discard stagnant water collected in containers around the campus and properly cover stored water to reduce mosquito breeding on campus.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement that it is working closely with the Ministry of Health to respond to the ongoing dengue outbreak, and the Ministry of Health Monitoring Committee has declared the current dengue outbreak an epidemic.
As of August 22, a total of 542 cases of dengue fever have been confirmed nationwide, reported from all health zones, with cases aged 0-33 years.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries the dengue virus usually bites people during the day when people are active. Therefore, people can be bitten at home, at work, and at school.

In view of the current situation, the Ministry of Education also recommended reducing garbage and overgrown bushes around schools. Principals were also asked to open schools so that the vector control department can increase the effectiveness of spraying.
“We urge all schools to implement the recommended measures and encourage parents and guardians to support these efforts by educating their children on how to prevent dengue and ensuring they take the necessary precautions.”
