Sri Lanka was elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a three-year term beginning on January 1, 2025, in an election held on June 7, 2024 in New York.
Sri Lanka received 182 votes out of 189 member states present and voting, the second highest number of votes from the region and the seventh highest number of votes overall. Sri Lanka was previously elected to ECOSOC from 1985 to 1989 and from 2006 to 2008.
As a member of ECOSOC, Sri Lanka will contribute to the Council’s efforts and programmes, including poverty eradication, food security, financing for development, reforming the international financial architecture to better support fragile states, climate justice, gender equality and women’s empowerment, rights of persons with disabilities, science and technology, and bridging the digital divide.
On June 7, 2024, the 18 countries selected from the 54 member states of ECOSOC included Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia from the Asia-Pacific region.
Sri Lanka’s election to ECOSOC is the fourth consecutive multilateral election for Sri Lanka and a major milestone in the diplomatic work led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its missions abroad.
The Economic and Social Council was established in 1945 in accordance with the UN Charter. It is one of the six major organs of the United Nations and the core platform within the United Nations system for coordinating economic and social affairs, promoting international cooperation and development, and matters related to the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Sri Lankan Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York is spearheading the campaign in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sri Lankan missions abroad.
