Spain made history at the Te Ufawa Stadium on Friday, defeating Tonga 29-20 to secure their first win in the competition’s history.
Spain took the lead with a well-taken shot from halfback Gonzalo Vinuesa. Despite a good start, Tonga’s Ikale Tahi struggled to capitalise. Vinuesa extended Spain’s lead from the penalty spot before Tonga’s hooker Sosaifo Sakaria tried to get on target. James Fewa’s attempt on goal was unsuccessful.
Spain regained control of the game, scoring from halfback Estanislao Bay after a quick five-meter throw-in, and Vinuesa added another goal. Another penalty before halftime gave Spain a 16-5 lead.
Tonga made adjustments at halftime, and Fewa’s touchdown and penalty reduced the deficit to 3 points. However, Spain’s Alva Jimeno seized on a Tonga turnover to score a touchdown, making his 40th appearance for Spain.
Despite efforts from Ikal Tahi, including a last-minute try, Vinuesa’s extra-time penalty sealed the win for the Lions. The result boosted the Spanish side in the World Rugby League standings as they concluded their Pacific tour. Ikal Tahi will look to bounce back next Friday against the Queensland Reds.
