Sovereign Council says Burhan told bin Zayed about UAE support for RSF

July 19, 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan’s Sovereign Council announced on Friday that its leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, informed United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed about Abu Dhabi’s alleged support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The paramilitary group has been in conflict with the Sudanese army for more than a year.

The official UAE news agency WAM reported late Thursday that bin Zayed received a call from Burhan, during which the two discussed the strong relations between the two countries and the latest developments in Sudan.

However, a statement issued by the Sovereign Council on Friday clarified that the UAE president expressed his desire to help end the ongoing war in Sudan during the call.

In the statement, Burhan told bin Zayed: “The Sudanese accuse Abu Dhabi of supporting the rebels and those who killed and destroyed their country and forced them to flee.”

He urged the UAE’s leaders to stop these actions.

The call, which sparked widespread reaction and controversy on social media, was the first direct communication between the two leaders after months of tensions and media exchanges.

Sudan claims that the UAE has been funding and providing weapons and military equipment to the RSF through Chad and Central Africa, having a significant impact on military fighting since April 15, 2023.

The accusations have strained relations between Sudan and the UAE, with Sudanese military leaders openly criticising the UAE leadership.

Tensions escalated further last month when representatives of the two countries got into a heated argument at a UN Security Council meeting, leading to the expulsion of diplomats from both countries.
