July 25, 2024 (Juba) – South Sudan on Thursday welcomed US-backed ceasefire talks between Sudan’s warring factions in Switzerland, saying an end to the conflict would save lives and prevent further destruction.
South Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ramadan Mohamed Abdullah said President Salva Kiir and his government welcomed the talks, noting the devastating impact of the war, which has left millions facing hunger and displacement.
“We have never given up advocating for peace in Sudan. President Salva Kiir Mayardit has always advocated for a peaceful resolution of political issues through dialogue,” Abdullah said.
The United States announced on Wednesday that it had invited Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group to negotiate a ceasefire in Geneva, Switzerland.
The talks are aimed at achieving a nationwide ceasefire, providing humanitarian aid and establishing a strong monitoring mechanism to ensure implementation of any agreement.
South Sudan is one of the countries most affected by Sudan’s conflict. The war has disrupted South Sudan’s oil exports, which rely on pipelines through Sudan to reach international markets.
One of the pipelines, which carries two-thirds of South Sudan’s oil exports, broke down in February and required extensive repairs that have been prevented by ongoing fighting, depriving the South Sudanese government of critical revenue and threatening to exacerbate chronic food shortages and fuel instability.
“Regional and global partners should prepare to provide urgent relief to South Sudan and redouble efforts to end the war in the north,” Abdullah said. “Hundreds of thousands of people have fled to the south, and the country cannot feed its inhabitants.”
