29 August 2024 (Juba) – South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has commended the spirit of progress in the Kenya-led peace process, noting the need to restore peace and stability to achieve economic recovery and development.
In a statement released on national television (St. Paul’s Bay Commercial Bank)South Sudan’s Information Minister Michael Makue Luais said President Kiir met and held talks with a government delegation, opposition, civil society organizations and religious groups participating in the Tumaini peace process in Nairobi, Kenya.
“His Excellency President Salva Kiir came to Nairobi to support the candidacy of former Prime Minister Raila Amoro Odinga for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission. As His Excellency the President of South Sudan is also the Chairperson of the East African Community, he attended the ceremony in his capacity as the Chairperson of the region which has nominated Raila Odinga as the candidate. He also attended the ceremony in his capacity as the President of a country in the region which was also attended by leaders from the region,” explained Makui.
“So this was an opportunity for the president to meet with our delegation and be briefed by them on the Toumani initiative. He met with our delegation, but also with members of the opposition and civil society organizations and religious groups,” he added.
The minister said the South Sudanese leader further appreciated the progress of the talks and pledged to shoulder their responsibilities to discuss with the signatories of the Juba peace agreement and agree on the way forward.
Lual Deng Malak, spokesman for the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, said President Kiir’s visit and talks with the alliance were a “historic move” that would add momentum to the peace process.
Malak said President Kiir has shown a strong interest in placing peace promotion above all else to promote lasting peace and move the country towards stability and prosperity.
He stressed that national unity and a shared commitment to peace must be the guiding principles of the ongoing negotiations to ensure a brighter future for all South Sudanese.
The President made the remarks earlier today at a major meeting of government and opposition delegations, including civil society representatives in Nairobi. The mediation team, led by experienced mediator General Lazarus Sumbeiywo, facilitated discussions between the government delegation and recalcitrant opposition groups.
The peace talks, which have been underway in the Kenyan capital for three months, have made encouraging and significant progress, according to officials closely involved in the process since it began earlier this year.
