August 19, 2024 (Juba) – South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has sacked Minister of Presidential Affairs Joseph Benghazi-Bakosoro, just one year into his tenure.
Kiir named Chol Mawut Ajonga as Bakosoro’s successor in a decree announced on state television (SSBC) on Monday.
No reason was given for the change.
Bakosoro was former Minister of Public Service in the Government of National Unity and an ally of President Kiir.
His appointment is largely seen as a strategic move by Kiir’s ruling party (SPLM) to seek support from Western Equatoria ahead of the December 2024 general elections.
