Rouillard said he made the decision because about 70% of the country’s population is illiterate, there is a chronic lack of quality schools and hospitals, and people die from hunger and preventable diseases.
“We cannot continue to call ourselves leaders when the people we serve are dying while leaders are illegally enriching themselves at the expense of the people. People are dying of preventable diseases while the men and women entrusted with providing services are flown to Juba with multi-million dollar stipends to be treated for malaria and other treatable illnesses,” the former lawmaker wrote.
He admitted that he had realized that they “are liars and the people of South Sudan are unfortunately being led by political liars. He sincerely believed that the opposition would change the political trajectory of our country and become the voice of the people by opposing the failed SPLM-led government. But it is not the case. It is a waste of time and energy to continue to stay in parliament.”
“Please accept this notice as my official resignation as a Member of Parliament and Member of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC). I know that the party president is Dr. Costello Garang Riiny, but since you are a SSOA representative and a senior official of our party, I thought it important to address this letter to you,” he said.
My resignation should not come as a surprise to you. I asked you in the middle of last year if you remembered why we were fighting and why we signed the agreement with the government. You never gave me an answer. You think I must be crazy to resign. You think this government is a godsend, a chance to get rich. I don’t think so,” added the former MP.

“I believe that our daily focus should be on how to save our people from poverty. But since we have not taken any action to help our people, I think it is appropriate to resign,” the former lawmaker said.
He added: “I am resigning because serving in this government has become a travesty and a fraud. My resignation should also tell others that I am an independent thinker who can resign when I believe that what I am doing goes against my beliefs and conscience.”
