South Sudan government and South Sudan Aid Association hold first meeting in months, agree on political dialogue

14 August 2024 (Rome) – In an important step towards peace in South Sudan, the Government and the SSOMA Leadership Committee (SSOMA LC) held their first meeting in months from 12 to 14 August 2024 in Rome.

The meeting was hosted by the Community of Sant’Egidio, attended by representatives of the Kenyan government and chaired by a special envoy from the South Sudanese government.

The main focus of the discussions was the Toumani Initiative, an inclusive and open process to achieve a sustainable and just peace settlement in South Sudan.

All parties held a frank dialogue and expressed their willingness to continue on the path of political negotiations, which is the only way to resolve the country’s political crisis and promote the recovery of the South Sudanese people.

Both sides agreed on the importance of resolving differences through political compromise and consultation. The mediation team expressed its willingness to accept the recommendations made by the South Sudan Mediation Commission for the benefit of all South Sudanese people.

The meeting marks a significant step forward in South Sudan’s peace process. It shows that both the government and the Mahmoud Armed Coalition have recommitted to dialogue and a political solution to the conflict. Although challenges remain, the willingness of both sides to come together to discuss their differences is a positive sign for the country’s future.

The international community welcomed the resumption of negotiations between the two sides. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan called the talks “an important step forward” and urged the two sides to continue to engage in good faith.

The people of South Sudan have suffered from years of conflict and hardship. The resumption of negotiations between the Government and the South Sudan Mahmoud Liberation Front offers a glimmer of hope for a peaceful and prosperous future.
