24 August 2024 (Juba) – South Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR) have pledged to strengthen border security between the two countries.
Authorities said of particular concern, improvements in roads and trade are urgently needed to strengthen bilateral ties and promote peace and stability in the region, which is struggling to combat illegal activities that undermine law and order.
Once implemented, this arrangement will be a landmark move in the history of both countries in the region. It is the largest move taken by South Sudan since its independence and the largest move taken by the Central African Republic in recent times.
Peace and security are critical to South Sudan and the Central African Republic, helping to drive economic growth.
Media and governments have hailed the agreement as a “game and destiny changer” for the region as the two countries hope to transform the massive investment program into a regional economic hub and further promote deepening ties between the two countries.
South Sudanese President Salva Kiir met with a delegation from the Central African Republic to discuss building a vital road connecting the two countries, his office said in a statement on Thursday.
The Central African Republic team, led by Minister of Roads and Public Services Rokos Camote-Matthew Eric, said President Kiir had expressed strong support for the initiative, which is in line with the framework of the Pan-African vision to strengthen infrastructure across the continent.
Central African Republic officials said the proposed road project is expected to facilitate smoother transportation and commerce, paving the way for economic growth in both South Sudan and the Central African Republic.
South Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ramadan Mohamed Abdallah Gok said Kiir had instructed all relevant departments to prioritize the initiative, stressing the government’s commitment to creating an environment for cooperation and common development.
