Brexit has been such an all-consuming process for the British — a farce, a mess and a mess — that it’s easy to forget that it’s part of a much larger problem: the crisis of Western liberalism. A growing number of countries have experienced events comparable to Brexit: Donald Trump’s defeat of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election; the election of a populist government in Italy; the uprising in Catalonia, Spain; the rise of populist dictators in Russia, Hungary, Poland and, to some extent, India; the fury on the BroadCast Unitedlectual dark web at what Viktor Orban calls “liberal bullshit.” By the time Brexit is done, the list will be even longer.
We should put aside the ins and outs of Brexit for a moment and look at the bigger picture, partly because the bigger picture helps us understand Brexit better (note: there’s more going on here than BBC bias or Russian gold), and partly because if we are to bring the country back together after Brexit, we need to understand the reasons for popular discontent. This post will try to answer two questions – why is liberalism so messed up? And how can it get out of its mess? But first a definition: what does this elusive word mean?
