MOGADISHU (HOL) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and the new U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Richard H. Riley met in Mogadishu on Tuesday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the discussions stressed strengthening cooperation in political, security and economic fields, focusing on Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (NTP) to achieve good governance, economic growth and social development.
Prime Minister Barre reiterated Somalia’s unwavering commitment to its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. He firmly opposed the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the leaders of the breakaway region of Somaliland. He stressed that the Memorandum of Understanding seriously threatens the collective stability of the region.
The deal grants Ethiopia maritime access and allows for a military base in Somaliland, which Somalia considers an infringement on its sovereignty.
Ambassador Reilly congratulated Somalia on its election to the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term and assured the United States of continued support in security, aid, and infrastructure development. He also expressed interest in U.S. companies investing in Somalia.
New U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Richard Riley presented his credentials to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at Mogadishu airport on Friday.
