Social media influencer Pemphero Mphande says Chilima was murdered – Malawi Nyasa Times

Renowned author and socialite, Pemphero Mphande, has expressed a controversial opinion on the death of Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others. In a widely circulated Facebook post, Mphande insisted that Chilima’s death was not a targeted assassination as some have claimed, but a collective failure of the Malawi government and its institutions.

Mpande dismissed claims that President Lazarus Chakwera or the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) were responsible for the crash, arguing that such an act would ultimately benefit the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He believed that the tragedy was caused by the country’s inadequate infrastructure, outdated aviation equipment and the government’s inability to provide citizens, including the country’s second-highest-ranking official, with modern and safe aircraft.

“Chilima was victimized by the inadequacies and flaws in our system of government and governance,” Mpande wrote. “He was victimized by a poor airport that does not have the latest systems and equipment. He was victimized by a government that cannot afford modern aircraft and instead uses old aircraft that were manufactured in 1988 and should have been retired.”

Mphande’s analysis sparked a wider debate, with scores of fans agreeing with him in the comments section of the post, while others expressed displeasure with his stance.

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party was accused of trying to exploit the tragedy for profit, allegedly organizing supporters to create chaos during the funeral, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

During the ongoing discussion, Mpande also admitted that Chilima was not perfect, saying he was “not a saint” and part of the “chaos and corruption” within the system. However, Mpande believed that Chilima had a vision for the future of Malawi and inspired people to believe in a brighter future for the country.

Mpande also slammed the prospect of the DPP returning to power, calling it a “ruthless vulture party” whose system of governance is one of destruction and terror. He called on young people to fulfill their civic duty and vote against the DPP.

As Malawi continues to mourn the death of the vice president, the debate over the causes of the tragedy and its wider implications for the country’s governance is likely to continue, and Mfunde’s views will add a thought-provoking element to the ongoing discussion.
