St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations celebrated the important milestone of the Union’s 50th anniversary of membership of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on Monday, July 22, 2024. The event, “Wear Your CARICOM Colors Day”, was held ahead of the official anniversary on July 26, 2024.
The commemoration coincided with the Mission’s role as Chair of the Caucus of CARICOM Ambassadors in New York for the months of July and August, during which time the celebration was incorporated into the first regular meeting of the Mission’s Caucus.
Permanent Representative Dr. Moutrice Williams said: “The Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis is honoured to chair the CARICOM Caucus as we celebrate the Alliance’s 50th anniversary of joining the CARICOM community. Our team’s uniforms feature the colours of the CARICOM community, reflecting the significance of this milestone.”
The team also includes a former CARICOM Youth Ambassador, which is also an important aspect of the current makeup of the Mission.
The Caribbean Community logo was displayed during the event. The logo features a blue background to represent the sky and the Caribbean Sea, a yellow circle to symbolize the sun, and a green ring to represent local vegetation. The logo consists of two interconnected Cs, symbolizing unity and freedom from colonial influence.
A key moment of the meeting was the visit of the current President of the UN Security Council, His Excellency Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative of Russia. His interaction with the CARICOM Caucus was a noteworthy aspect of the meeting.
Under the chairmanship of Saint Kitts and Nevis, the CARICOM Caucus works to represent the interests of the Caribbean in various UN forums. The Mission works to coordinate the activities of the Caucus and address key issues, including the vulnerability of Small Island Developing States, climate action, the situation in Haiti, and the need for development assistance and concessional financing.
The event and exchange reflected the Federation’s ongoing role within CARICOM and its efforts to represent Caribbean perspectives on the global stage.
