Staying in silence, away from everyday stress and noise, makes everyone happy, and scientists claim that this has multiple beneficial effects on people.
Silence gives us the opportunity to connect with ourselves better. It calms the brain, repairs cells and rejuvenates them, which is why we feel calmer. By slowing down the brain, our breathing slows down as well. After spending two hours in silence, the recovery process begins. This contributes to better memory and greater resistance to stress, and we also feel well-rested. Silence is to our brain what healthy food is to the body.
Besides, being silent can bring us long-term satisfaction. There is hardly a moment in the day when we are not exposed to modern technology. People are socializing less and less because their eyes are glued to their phones, tablets and TVs. Try not to use them too often, because then your brain will get a rest and you will feel more fulfilled.
Being quiet allows us to be more aware of our surroundings, to hear sounds we haven’t heard before, such as the sound of the wind, the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the snapping of branches… Silence not only improves our hearing, but also all our other senses. Noise blocks them, while silence unblocks them.
Our brains focus on something in complete peace, without effort or distraction. We do this unconsciously – letting our minds wander from one thought to another, which leads to a slower pace of life and has beneficial effects on the mind and body.
When we sit quietly, we cannot escape from deep thoughts. Then we become more open to personal feelings, desires, thoughts, and maybe even feelings of sadness. People see themselves differently, they become more honest with themselves, as if something is concrete for them. Then we can locate the problem more easily and calmly find a way to solve it.
Nowadays, everyone is in a rush. Obligations are many and time is scarce. Slowing down the pace of life is extremely important. Silence soothes our emotions and gives us a chance to let go of accumulated stress. It opens our eyes and shows us how important the present moment is.
It’s hard to find a corner where you can feel calm, but try it because you will feel better and happier. Give your brain a chance to calmly process all the information and be ready to take on new challenges again.
Experts suggest that we should spend at least one or two hours in quiet time every day to maintain physical and mental health.
