International statesman and former Commonwealth Secretary-General Sir Shridas Ramfar, who died yesterday at the age of 95, has been hailed for his decades of high-level service to Guyana, the region and beyond.
His death was announced by his son-in-law, Sir Ronald Saunders.
“It is with great sadness that the family of Sir Shridath ‘Sonny’ Ramphal announces that he will pass away peacefully on August 30, 2024, surrounded by his children. Born on October 3, 1928 in New Amsterdam, British Guiana (now Guyana), Sir Shridath was a prominent figure in the international diplomatic community and a highly respected senior statesman in the Commonwealth and the Caribbean”.
President Irfaan Ali praised him as a “giant among humans”.
