New York: World number one Jannik Sinner’s quest for a second Grand Slam title continued to gain momentum as he beat Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday.
Sinner watched two of his biggest title rivals fall at Flushing Meadows this week as Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic were defeated, and it took him one hour and 53 minutes to defeat his 87th-ranked opponent.
The Italian had started slowly in his first two matches at the U.S. Open, but he came out on top on Arthur Ashe Stadium, taking a 5-0 lead and winning the first set on serve.
Australian O’Connell put up some resistance in the second set, but Sinner broke early to lead 2-1 and sealed the win with a ferocious forehand cross-court winner.
Sinner continued to attack O’Connell with winners, breaking serve twice in the final set to take the victory, increasing his total number of winners to 46 points.
Australian Open champion Sinner’s most powerful weapon in the win was his perfect serve, hitting 15 aces in the three-set match and preventing O’Connell from getting any break points.
O’Connell, who had lost all eight previous meetings with top-10 players, looked helpless and his hopes of reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time were dashed.
In the fourth round, Sinner will face either 14th-seeded local hope Tommy Paul or Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo.
