The scheduled signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Department for Education and the GTU on a multi-year wage package has been delayed, according to union president Mark Lyte.
The decision to delay the pay rise came after union members negotiated a proposed 10% pay rise for 2024 following signs the government’s proposals had sparked internal divisions.
Coretta McDonald, Secretary General of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), also gave Stabroek News further updates on the situation. She said yesterday that although the government formally proposed a 10% increase last Thursday, the supporting document only mentioned a 9% increase. As a result, the GTU’s highest decision-making body, the membership, rejected the 10% proposal, delaying the final signing of the MoU.
