Sicily is once again afraid of volcanoes: Mount Etna is spewing fire. The Volacci crater, at an altitude of 2,800 to 2,900 meters, has been active since yesterday evening, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reports. Last night’s eruption of Mount Etna was the fifth recorded eruption of Europe’s highest active volcano since early July. The main highlight was the Voragine crater, which had extremely high lava fountains and a 10-kilometer-high ash cloud. The ash spread southeastward, and several nearby communities were covered in a layer of ash.
