TALOUBA, Trinidad and Tobago: South Africa came from a leading position to lose to West Indies by 30 runs in a T20 international on Sunday, leaving the Caribbean side with a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The West Indies won with 179 for 6, but South Africa had already secured victory, winning with 129 for 3 with more than 6 overs remaining.

South Africa then lost only 7 wickets in 35 balls for 20 runs and were eventually bowled out for 149 runs.

Reeza Hendricks made a strong start to the run chase with 44 runs off 18 balls, but it was a day to remember for the West Indies fast bowlers at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Stadium.

Romario Shepherd bowled four innings and took figures of 3-15, taking the crucial wickets of Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram (19).

Fellow fast bowler Shamar Joseph took figures of 3-31 to do damage to the lower order.

Shai Hope scored 41 runs off 22 balls to help the home team to a good finish, while captain Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford scored 35 and 29 runs respectively to help the home team through the final innings.

After a strong start from the visitors, Powell was pleased with the way his side turned things around.

“We put pressure after the powerplay. The wicket will get us back into the game. The game changes very quickly in T20 cricket,” he said.

Markram said his young, experimental team would learn from the defeat and try to correct its mistakes in Tuesday’s final.

He said: “It is difficult to say now what we have learned, but one thing is guaranteed, and that is our never-say-die attitude.” – AFP
