In today’s new Uzbekistan, great importance is attached to the development of reading culture and book publishing. As our head of state said, “education does not stop”, and in every meeting with intellectuals, representatives of culture, literature and art, in every historic speech that sounded like an appeal to our people, he paid special attention to the issue of learning and understanding the basics of world civilization, the achievements of modern world science. He never tired of emphasizing the words “knowledge, knowledge, knowledge” over and over again.
“The strength of every country and nation in the world rests, first of all, on its intellectual potential and noble spirituality,” said President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. It is not without reason that he said that the source of this great strength is the great discovery of human thought: books and readers.
As is known to all, a lot of work has been done on the Decree of the President of Uzbekistan of January 12, 2017 “On the establishment of a committee for the development of the book publishing and distribution system, the promotion of the culture of reading and reading”, the Decision of September 13, 2017 “On a comprehensive program of measures to develop the book publishing and distribution system, increase and promote the culture of reading and reading”, and the Decision “On additional measures for further development of the publishing and printing industry”.
On December 14, 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan adopted the decision “On the approval of the State Program for the Development and Support of Reading Culture for 2020-2025”.
The implementation of this national plan has yielded positive results.
The fourth initiative proposed by the President – improving the spiritual cultivation of young people and promoting reading widely – is a serious practical work being carried out in our country. Young people, especially teenagers and children, are widely participating in reading competitions.
Members of the Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan actively participate in reading and developing reading habits. The Union has a committee for children and young people’s writing and regularly organizes master classes by well-known poets and writers in all schools and higher and secondary educational institutions in the country.
From April to May this year, as part of the “Sharing Inspiration” project to attract students from colleges and universities and ordinary schools in my country to read books, improve their artistic literacy, and cultivate patriotism and concern for the country and the people, 156 famous artists held writer meetings and educational activities in 202 colleges and universities and 606 middle schools under their auspices, recommended 150 works of art for reading, and screened films and performances.
In 2020-2023, the Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan published 403 books in the fields of prose, poetry, plays, children’s literature, literary studies and artistic translation. In the past few years, our poets, writers and translators have prepared to publish 100 volumes of “Masterpieces of Russian Literature” and 100 volumes of “Masterpieces of Turkish Literature”. This great project has been supported by the head of state and has been published and distributed to all regions.
At this point, it should be noted that the Union of Writers of Uzbekistan has prepared and submitted to publishing houses a 16-volume collection of Masterpieces of Karakalpak Literature.
As part of the “Book Campaign” project, in the first quarter of 2023, 4,679 books were sent to higher education institutions and general education schools, 14,800 books were sent to provinces, 50 books were sent to exile colonies, 950 books were sent to the Ministry of Internal and Spiritual Affairs, Information and Library Centers, 500 books were sent to the National Security Service, 7,267 books were sent to event participants and book authors, 461 books were sent to newspapers and creative agencies, 300 books were sent to the Uzbek-Kyrgyz Friendship Association, 350 books were sent to communities, 134 books were sent to Muslim offices, more than 30,791 books were distributed indiscriminately to the Uzbek Association of Veterans, Veterans and Disabled People, 500 books were sent to Khalk Bank, and 600 books were sent to children’s camps. So far, more than 1 million books have been distributed in four years.
Currently, the Uzbek Writers’ Union is preparing to publish a 100-volume edition of the “World Children’s Literature Classics” series.
From 2020 to 2023, the “My First Book” project of the Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan published tens of thousands of copies of the first books of 87 young writers, and held giveaway events to distribute them free of charge to universities, general education schools and the military.
All this is mainly aimed at developing reading habits among young people, children and teenagers. Book publishing and reading promotion will continue.
