NIA CHARLESTON NEVIS – Seven students from elementary schools across Nevis are the beneficiaries of the 2024 Nevisians Association of Washington, D.C. (NEV-DC) Naomi Daniel Brown Scholarship.
The Ministry of Education recently held a scholarship award ceremony in the Nevis Department of Disaster Management conference room.
Scholarship recipients were Daniel Lowe of Joycelyn Liburd Elementary School, Amiya Archibald of Elizabeth Pemberton Elementary School, Karenik Storode of Ivor Walters Elementary School, Celine Gambs of Charleston Elementary School, Aniya Sinaline of St. Thomas Elementary School, Ugesh Shrestha of Violet Jeffers Nichols Elementary School, and Naira Black of St. James Elementary School.
NEV-DC Chairman, Mr Anthony Pemberton, said he was honoured to present the award to one of the organisation’s founding members, the late Mrs Naomi Daniel-Browne, a vocational educator from Kingland, Nevis.
“She was a dedicated educator who left an intangible mark on our community. This is the fourth year that NEV-DC has had the privilege of honoring Naomi’s legacy through this award. As president of NEV-DC, my goal is to keep Naomi’s passion for teaching alive. She believed so strongly that no child should be left behind, and we share the same belief,” he said, noting that Ms. Daniel-Browne believed in recognizing students who worked tirelessly and made great strides.
Currently, NEV-DC only awards one student per school, but Mr Pemberton said the organisation hopes to see the scholarship programme grow and develop. He thanked the Ministry of Education for its continued support and congratulated the seven recipients.
In her speech, Mrs. Jasmine Daniel, a relative of the award winner, thanked NEV-DC for creating this prestigious program in her name to recognize students who have excelled in education.
“As an educator, Naomi took the time to provide support to children who needed extra help so they could reach their full potential… I hope to encourage all students to continue to persevere in their studies, strive for excellence, and maximize their potential in life,” she said.
Chief Education Officer, Ms. Londa Browne, on behalf of the Nevis Ministry of Education, thanked NEV-DC and the Daniel family for their continued involvement and encouraged the students to continue their efforts.
“Awards and contributions like this are so important because they help us help our students continue their pursuit of excellence.”
Ms. Naomi Daniel Brown is from Mead Ranch in Kingell, Nevis. She had a distinguished teaching career at Kingell Elementary School (now Joycelyn Liburd Elementary School) from 1980 to 1999. She immigrated to the United States in 2020 where she has successfully pursued her passion as a consummate educator.
