Seven people were killed in an accident on the small plane they were travelling in southern Chile on Friday morning, the Chilean General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) reported in a statement.
DGAC lost contact with the Piper Navajo light aircraft at 9:13 a.m. local time (1:13 p.m. GMT), minutes after taking off from Coheque Airport, about 1,700 kilometers south of Chile.
The DGAC statement noted that “the pilot and his six passengers” had died, but did not mention the cause of the accident.
The region’s presidential deputy, Rodrigo Araya, assured that he has instructed the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Legal Medical Service to start an investigation into the incident.
“We are now entering the investigation phase to determine why this happened,” Araya told the outlet.
Due to adverse weather conditions in the area, it has not yet been determined when the bodies of the victims will be removed.
“Bad weather is coming, with snowfall… It could take several days or even three days for the region,” explained Army General Mario Sepúlveda.
