July 17, 2024 (SENAR) – The southeastern Sudanese city of Senar is on the brink of famine due to a siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has taken control of the main supply routes, cutting off food and fuel supplies to the city, leaving residents without basic necessities.
The resistance committee in Sennar reported that flour and rice had been completely sold out from the market and grain mills had closed due to lack of electricity. The situation was exacerbated by the looting of markets and crops in surrounding villages by the Rapid Support Forces.
The Coordination Organization for the Establishment of the Revolutionary Charter of People’s Power in Sennar State warned that the city’s four million residents could face starvation if an urgent solution was not found.
The group proposed setting up agricultural and solar cooperatives to help deal with the crisis. It also called on Sudanese living abroad to donate money to buy seeds and solar panels.
Humanitarian groups are stepping up warnings about a deepening hunger crisis in Sudan, where 25.6 million people are already facing severe hunger.
