KOROR, Palau – Senator Stevenson Kuartei has filed a formal complaint with Senate President Hokkons Baules against a letter sent by Senator Rukebai Inabo to the Palau Election Commission (PEC).
Inabo’s letter, dated July 30, asks the PEC to review the candidacy of former President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. for the upcoming presidential election and reject his nomination. The letter, written on the letterhead of the Senate Ways and Means and Financial Matters (WMFM) Committee, names the committee members, including Kurte, without their prior knowledge or approval.
“I strongly protest the inclusion of my name in this letter without my consent or agreement,” Kurtei wrote to Bowles on August 2. He stressed that as a member of the WMFM committee, he was not consulted about the letter.
Inabo clarified during the Senate meeting on August 1 that her request was not to support any candidate but to address constitutional issues. However, Senator Mark Rudimuchi advocated “letting the Electoral Commission do its work independently.”
Meanwhile, Senator Secilil Eldebechel argued that these actions were within the rights of individual senators. Senator Umiich Sengebau tried to divert attention to other national issues.
The incident sparked mixed reactions from Senators and the public on how Senator Inabo should have properly handled the complaint.
