Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has lost his seat.
This came after senators in the Meru County Assembly supported her impeachment.
About 26 senators voted to uphold the first charge of grave violations of the Constitution and other laws.
About 14 senators abstained from voting, while four voted in favor.
On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators voted in favor of impeachment, 2 senators opposed, and 14 senators abstained.
Twenty-seven senators supported the charge of abuse of power, one voted against, and 14 abstained.
Most of those who abstained were allies of the opposition.
Senate President Amasun Kingi said: “In accordance with Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of the County Government Act and Senate Standing Order 86, the Senate has decided to remove the Meru County Governor, Mr. Kavira Mwangaza, by impeachment and the County Governor is no longer in office.”
This is the third impeachment case submitted to the Senate since Mwangaza was elected in August 2022.
The first impeachment hearing was heard and decided by the committee, but the second and third impeachment hearings were conducted in full session.
The trial began on Monday with a standoff between lawyers representing her and the county council.
Mwangaza was given an opportunity to present his case to the House.
On the day of the debate on the recall motion, 49 of the 69 MCAs present in parliament voted in favour of Mwangaza’s removal.
Mwangaza denies all charges.
During the hearing, Mwangaza spoke about her relationship with the Meru leader after she was spared impeachment in 2023.
Mwangaza said she had reconciled with county leaders following the advice of parliament.
The governor said she has travelled across Meru County to apologise to those who may have been harmed by her.
She assured that she had reconciled with her leader at that time and there were no problems.
“I walked around Meru and apologised to everyone I might have offended. At one point, I said sorry 70 times, 69 times to every MCA and once to the Speaker. I said sorry 70 times,” she said.
