This international seminar, held at the Albert David Center in Spunikoro (4th commune of the Bamako region), aimed to explore the important role that religious journalists can play in understanding and addressing security challenges in the Sahel region in particular and in Africa in general. The event brought together experts, media professionals and journalists from all over Africa, regardless of their religious affiliation.
The Sahel is a region of great strategic importance that faces complex security and governance challenges. Journalists, as guardians of information and democratic values, play a vital role in understanding and addressing these challenges. In a context where press freedom is often undermined, false information is rampant, and journalists are sometimes directly threatened, religious journalists feel the need to reaffirm the importance of their role in promoting transparency, accountability and peace.
This refresher program was therefore organized, intended to be a constructive moment of sharing and reflection, at the service of the profession and the community. The discussions focused, among other things, on accountability, security issues in the Sahel and the role and responsibility of journalism in these issues. The meeting also discussed the role that journalist-communicators can and must play in addressing all the security difficulties, accountability and governance issues in the Sahel.
Today we will question how religious journalists can contribute specifically to these issues. Our faith can be a source of inspiration, courage and integrity in our journalistic work, but it also raises important ethical and ontological questions, explains Alexis Karambri, chair of the organizing committee.
According to him, at the end of this forum it is planned to develop review actions that will concern the results of our reflection and how we communicate this to our authorities by making everyone aware of what we should have decided and the resolutions we ask to be implemented regarding our share of responsibility.
In his speech, the representative of the Synod will confirm that he is present at the ceremony in support of this forum, and he will say that this is a favorable opportunity for our journalists to further train themselves to provide clear and accurate information. As we have pointed out, today information spreads in an impressive way and at a dizzying speed. Therefore, for us, he stressed, it is about spreading the truth, not misleading statements and false information.
He added that the Church stands with all journalists who want to build the country and a society of peace, justice and truth for the common good of the people. The representative of the Episcopal Conference concluded by praying and blessing this forum so that it will become a source of peace, cohesion and stability in our country.
The Minister of Religious Affairs and Worship, for his part, said he was happy to see that these journalists knew their role as believers, knowing that they could also contribute as believers, and most importantly contribute to the security of our Sahel region, which is today the AES region. He described the forum as a good initiative.
The Catholic Press Union of Africa (UCAP) is a continental organization of media professionals, based in Scam Accra (Ghana). One of Ucap’s main objectives is to contribute to the personal and spiritual growth of media professionals, especially journalists and communicators. The organization is a meeting point and coordination center for apostolic and professional activities on issues of evangelization and human development. In addition, Ucap actively expands its network of collaboration with non-Catholic organizations within its scope of operations.
