Belize’s sole competitor at the 2024 Paris Olympics, 31-year-old Belizean-American athlete Shaun Gill, announced his retirement after competing in the men’s 100m race on Saturday, August 3.

Gill participated in only one race, finishing sixth in the fourth round of the men’s 100m preliminaries with a time of 11.17 seconds, and therefore failed to advance to the next round. After the race, Gill announced his retirement to Olympic reporters: “You don’t know, but this is my last race. I’m retiring. This is the official announcement. This is the last time and it’s a sad moment for me. I didn’t compete and didn’t perform as I expected, but this is the last time. So, thank you! This is my farewell tour.”
Gil, flag bearer for the Pearl, waved the Belize flag at the opening ceremony as athletes sailed upstream.
This was Gil’s second time on the world stage. He competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics alongside several other Belizean athletes and, like this year’s Olympics, he finished fifth in the first round before failing to advance past the preliminaries.
“Thank you for your support. Thank you for your confidence in me. You know, I hope I represented you well. Like I said, this is goodbye. Thank you, everybody,” Gill said.
Gill was accompanied on the visit by Cojac Smith, president of the Belize Athletics Association, and Giovanni Alamilla, head of the Belize delegation.
He was recently accepted to Texas A&M University, where he plans to pursue a master’s degree in management.
