Ferozeko (Pajhwok): Doctors and officials in the western province of Ghor have spoken of the increase in positive cases of the scabies skin disease in the province and asked people to pay attention to personal and environmental hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.
They said scabies is a microbial skin disease that is spread through dirt, contact with animals, clothing or sharing a bed. During the illness, red smoke appears on the skin, accompanied by itching.

He said the disease started from the claws of the hands and feet, then spread to other parts of the body, with less itching during the day and more severe itching at night.
However, Dr Aziz said scabies is curable and preventable, and anyone infected with scabies should see a doctor and receive treatment as soon as possible.
“Unfortunately, the disease has spread,” said Dr. Abdul Sattar Muwafaq, director of the provincial health department. “In the first three months of last year, we had a small number of patients with scabies in the hospital. The hospital registered one to two cases per week, but this year, from the beginning of the year to now, the hospital has referred three to five people. The number of cases of the disease is higher this year.”
He said that while the disease is contagious and can affect other members of the family, it is easily treatable and preventable.
He added that people can treat the disease by consulting a doctor and prevent its spread by paying attention to personal and environmental hygiene, bathing, changing clothes and bed sheets.

Sediqa, a resident of Ghor province who suffers from the disease, said she initially went to see a doctor after red smoke appeared on her skin accompanied by itching.
She said: “I noticed a red rash on my skin which I thought was measles and it was itchy. When I went to the doctor, he said it was Gurgi and gave me medicine. I used the same medicine and now I am fine, thanks to him.”
She said her sister also contracted the disease and recovered after using medication.
She said: “My sister and I often rested and did housework in the same room at night, so my disease was transmitted to her and she suffered a lot at night.”
Abdul Karim, who recently returned from Iran, said that he contracted scabies in Iran and is currently receiving treatment and his condition is improving.
