Fifteen firefighters and three fire trucks from the Santo Domingo de los Sachilas Fire Department will be involved in extinguishing the fire in Quilanga de Loja department.
Álvaro Cuadrado, squad leader, said the fire brigade set out for the town on Thursday, August 29, at around 4:00 p.m.
Before setting off, the volunteers were given a medical assessment and their equipment was checked. Local Fire Department Chief Hugo Parra and Mayor Wilson Eraso accompanied the inspection.
Two firefighters injured in Loja forest fire
“I express my deep solidarity with the community of Lohaquiranga, which has been affected by the devastating fires that threaten several communities. Currently, the Santo Domingo Fire Department is sending a task force to support smothering efforts and provide assistance in emergency situations,” the mayor said.
Firefighters from Pinas, Zamora, Gonzanama, Azogues, Bibilián, Canar, El Tambo, Loja, Puyango, Portoviejo and other municipalities also joined the rescue efforts in Quilanga, where the fire has burned nearly 4,000 hectares of vegetation.
Injured firefighter in stable condition
Firefighter Edwin Ortiz Saritama, who suffered burns on 30% of his body in the Kilanga forest fire, is in a stable condition. The volunteer was part of a team of six firefighters from Zamora. Rodolfo Perez, director of the Zamora Fire Department, revealed that he is currently admitted to a clinic in the city of Loja.
At least 27 firefighters from Loja, along with five community members and armed forces, were deployed to control the fire in Limón Bajo. The goal was to protect nearby infrastructure and evacuate residents at risk.
Kilanga Mayor Juan Carlos Santin said gusty winds fuelled the fire, necessitating the need for an aerial refuelling helicopter.
Through FIRMS NAZA satellite monitoring, we observed the disaster progress and coordinated with the Bambi helicopter to continue to extinguish the flames.
Devastating bushfire in Loha Kilanga burns more than 470 hectares
The National Risk Management Secretariat issued a statement on Thursday, August 29, reporting the impacts recorded. As of 10:30, three people were injured, two houses were completely destroyed and a poultry farm was damaged. At the national level, 12 fires were reported that were being monitored.
Planned activities
On Sunday, September 1, starting at 09:00, the Loja City Council will carry out a solidarity campaign for the victims of Quilanga. The Santo Domingo Lojanos Residents Association will do the same. Donations of various items are requested, such as masks, water, moisturizing serums, food, clothes and animal food. (I)
