ST. KITTS AND NEVIS (WINN): As the Commonwealth continues to recover from Tropical Storm Ernesto, initial assessments estimate the damage totals in the millions of dollars.

The Department of Public Works has completed an assessment of government infrastructure.

Outgoing National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) chairman Abdias Samuel highlighted the ongoing efforts.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the economic impact or losses across sectors are EC$2.1 million. That is a preliminary figure, EC$2.1 million. That is the figure represented to the agency by the Damage Assessment and Restoration Subcommittee under the guidance and chairmanship of the Director of the Department of Public Works, Mr. George Gilbert. As this is only a preliminary report, that figure may actually increase,” he said.

Several areas in St. Kitts are still without power, but Samuel stressed that crews are working around the clock to restore electricity.

Samuel expressed concerns about the management of the “shelter in place” order in his assessment.

Senior weather official Elmo Burke spoke about the storm and the public’s response.
