Apia, Samoa – July 22, 2024 – The Daily Telegraph published a report that “people are calling for an upgrade after reviews complained about mouldy sheets and old tiles”, prompting a flood of online comments from disappointed Samoans. The King and Queen will stay at the luxury beachfront resort during the CHOGM Samoa conference in October this year.
A former Samoan Foreign Ministry official criticised the report “Typical ‘palagi’ media! Always reporting the bad, instead of highlighting the positives… again, typical palagi colonial attitude!”
Another netizen said “Really? This made the British news? I guess they pick on little things to make headlines and embarrass Samoa.”
The luxury beachfront resort in Samoa where King Charles and Queen Camilla will stay is reportedly eager to upgrade following reviews of its mouldy sheets and dated tiles.
The report cited mixed reviews from former customers, which mentioned “moldy sheets” and a “creaky air conditioner.”
The hotel, which was not named for security reasons, said it would receive 300,000 Saudi shillings in government funds to upgrade its run-down hotel facilities ahead of the royal visit in October.
It is claimed that most of the funds will be used to upgrade the presidential suite, where the king and queen may stay, and other funds will be used to install bathrooms, water features, and improve the driveway and entrance roundabout leading to the presidential suite.
Buckingham Palace reportedly confirmed the king and queen will travel to Australia and then to Samoa to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which opens in Samoa on October 21.
King Charles carries out first official duties as head of Commonwealth
Samoa CHOGM 2024 This is the first time King Charles has performed official duties as Head of the Commonwealth since he ascended the throne on September 8, 2022 and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
It will be the first time the tiny Pacific island of Samoa will host the 56 Commonwealth member states, many of which were once colonies of the British Empire.
Samoa has a long tradition of hosting tour groups, which remains an important part of its living culture and traditions, often mobilising villages to host guests in an open environment. fail.
For the CHOGM meeting, each of the 56 member states has designated a different village as host, and while most of the dignitaries will stay in hotels, the designated village as host will work with the police to ensure security throughout the meeting.
The host village will also be decorated in the colours of the guest country’s flag to show welcome and support to the Samoan families far away from home.
Last week, the first delegation of Commonwealth member states visited Samoa in advance to assess Samoa’s preparations and hosting obligations, and to study logistical arrangements, accommodation options for heads of government and transportation details.
Organizers said host governments usually arrange advance visits at least four months before the opening of CHOGM so that member states can send security, protocol and operations experts to the host country to learn about CHOGM planning in advance.
Commenting on the Daily Telegraph report, a former Samoa national rugby team representative who had contact with the late Queen said: “It’s as if any head of state sleeps on old sheets. As one comedian said of the old Queen, she thought the world smelled of paint because she decorated everything she went around.”
